How long has the sport been around?
The first SnowbikeŽ was introduced in 1949 in Austria. In the 60's and 70's, it was known as a ski bob or a ski bike. The term ski bob is still used in Europe, but here the term ski bob has been replaced with SnowbikeŽ. Snowbiking has been popular in Europe and it is gaining popularity in Colorado.
Which Colorado ski resorts allow snowbikes?
In Summit County, Keystone, Copper Mountain, and Arapahoe Basin currently allow snowbikes. In Grand County, Winter Park also allows Snowbikes.
Can I rent a SnowbikeŽ and learn on my own?
No. Since this is a new and upcoming sport, the ski resorts have safety concerns. We require that anyone using a SnowbikeŽ to have received proper instruction on its use and how to load and unload from a chairlift.
What is the SnowbikeŽ rental and learning Process?
If you have received your SnowbikeŽ certification card, you can rent a SnowbikeŽ and take it to Copper Mountain, Keystone, or Arapahoe Basin. If you have not ridden before, you need to be certified by learning how to SnowbikeŽ by an instructor, probably a 40 to 60 minute lesson. This can be done at Copper Mountain, Keystone, or Arapahoe Basin based upon the instructor's availability.
Who is a SnowbikeŽ Rental for?
People who have never skied before can learn this quickly and keep up with the rest of the group. People with knee problems can SnowbikeŽ putting a lot less pressure on the knee joints than skiing or snowboarding.
Is Snowbiking hard to learn?
It is easier to learn how to SnowbikeŽ than it is to learn how to ski or snowboard. Most people pick it up inside of an hour and begin enjoying their SnowbikeŽ experience immediately.
How old do you have to be to rent a SnowbikeŽ?
Children must be 9 years or older. Smaller bikes are available for young riders.
How much do they weigh?
A full-size SnowbikeŽ weighs less than 16 pounds.
How do you get them on the lift?
A SnowbikeŽ can be taken up on a chairlift, in a gondola, or on a T-bar. This is explained during the instruction you will receive when you first rent a SnowbikeŽ.
Do I need any special equipment?
Helmets are always a good idea. You will need either ski boots or snowboard boots to fit into the bindings of the short skis you will wear on your feet.
